INTERNATIONAl MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY

Aksent Suisse Academy join the global celebration proclaimed by UNESCO to promote the preservation and protection of all languages used by peoples of the world

The International Mother Language Day was officially declared by UNESCO’s General Conference in November 1999, following a proposal from Bangladesh. This initiative received support from the UN General Assembly in a 2002 resolution, recognizing the significance of preserving one’s mother tongue.

In a resolution dated 16 May 2007, the UN General Assembly urged its Member States to support the preservation and protection of the world’s languages, via resolution A/RES/61/266. Furthermore, it declared 2008 as the International Year of Languages. This was aimed at fostering global unity through diversity and enhancing international relations through the promotion of multilingualism and multiculturalism, with UNESCO leading these efforts.

The importance of languages in various aspects of development is increasingly acknowledged today. Languages are essential for promoting cultural diversity and facilitating intercultural dialogue. They are crucial in fostering cooperation, achieving quality education for everyone, creating inclusive societies of knowledge, conserving cultural heritage, and leveraging science and technology for sustainable development through concerted political effort.

In order to celebrate the International Mother Language Day, ISA schools are encouraged to send video containing a speech from school students: you can watch the video made by Aksent Suisse International Academy.

Embracing our mother tongues enriches our global tapestry, uniting and educating us in diversity.
